Oppurtunities at Christian Colleges

There are many choices available for students seeking a degree from a Christian college or university. The best place to start to find local institutions could be your church. Find out where other congregants have gone to school and ask how they liked the academic programs and student communities.

There are also many students who prefer online degrees due to the convenience and flexibility of classes and schedules. Many options are available for online learners in a Christian environment.

Whether you are looking for a campus-based or online college, here are some questions to ask:

What is the college's statement of mission and values?

How much emphasis does the statement give to Christian values and beliefs? Does the college also stress the importance of academic rigor and preparation for meaningful careers? You are making an investment in your future.  Make sure it will have a meaningful return, both personally and financially.

What courses are available in Christian and religious studies?

Many Christian colleges and universities require students take electives in religious studies. Find out how many and what types of courses are available. They should be informative and related to your personal interests.

What is the Christian community like?

Finding a community of believers to support you and your personal development can be just as important as your academic studies. Campus-based universities offer several opportunities for get-togethers, services, Bible studies, etc.

Online colleges also allow students to connect with each other. Many universities are cohort-based, meaning you attend classes with the same group of students during your course of study. Others offer on-campus short sessions (3-4 days) allowing you to meet classmates face to face. And thanks to today’s technology, social networking websites and school services allow you to connect to fellow students in your hometown or across the globe.

What community service opportunities are available?

Living a Christian life includes serving others. Does the school provide ways to minister to your community or other students? And does the college give back to the community?

Starting with these questions will help guide you to find the right Christian college or university for you.
